Web414 August 2008 Meeting

I am giving a talk at the next Web414 meeting in Milwaukee about my experience with developing an application in Adobe AIR. I am super excited. Ever since I started with Flex 3 I have been super geeked about what I have been learning. So if you are in the Milwaukee area on the 14th of August I would love you to come by! The meetings are held at bucketworks located on 1340 N 6th St Milwaukee, WI.

Thanks to Mike Rohde for hooking this up!

Adobe AIR Update Framework.

I am getting closer to having FlossyFX completed. One feature that I need to work on was the auto update to provide users with new versions of the app. I did a search online to see how other people are doing it and found that Adobe released their own package called Adobe AIR Update Framework last month.

The framework uses XML on a server to store the latest version, update description, and download path. You point the code to the xml and it checks itself against your current version using the application xml file.

The framework comes in two version for UI and non-UI and also in ActionScript and Javascript. I was going to code up an example but I think the samples that Adobe provides are solid. You can download the code and samples on adobe labs.

One thing to note is that the framework is still in beta, but it seemed stable enough to use. I guess you could provide the final code update when you update your app!

AIR Cairngorm

Eric Feminella has got a post on his blog about his integration of Cairngorm with AIR. I used Cairngorm with AIR for flossy. I really like how he setup the services for SQL and the File system. He also got the AIR-cairgen working with it too. The man is a genius!

FlossyFX v2 Beta 1

So one day at work one of the designers showed me FlossyFX v1.5. He asked if it was possible to add a few features like drag and drop samples or keep the application always on top.

Once he said that I thought, "Well I can do that with Adobe's AIR!" So he got me in contact with DJ Autobot from Flosstradamus, the creator of FlossyFX and we got to work.

A few weeks later we now have FlossyFX v2 beta 1! Click on the AIR Badge installer below. Click here to download FlossyFX manually.

Here's what's new:

Thinner
Flossy is now slimmer so that is fits nice while running Serato.

Always on top
One of the most requested features! Now Flossy will always stay on top! No need to alt tab to find it anymore. Just click on the application to activate it!

Drag and Drop
You can drag your mp3 samples from Serato straight on to a key in Flossy!

Multiple Fire
Activate multiple sounds by turning the Multiple fire switch or holding the shift key down!

Save and Load .ffx
Once you have custom samples inside FlossyFX you can save a reference of the files to load in later!

Adobe AIR new logo

The Flash Blog and Mike Chambers are announcing the new Adobe AIR logo.

This is kind of a pull from Adobe's current line of iconography, but I think because of the platform nature of AIR, it's understandable why the didn't follow their current conventions.
